Edgewood High School
With “phase two” of the season coming to end the Lions were hoping to cap off a perfect 5-0 record going into league play. However, the Lions had to earn every possession against a tough Arroyo Knights team that one year ago defeated Edgewood 65-59.
The Lions were out to avenge last year’s tough loss as Sebastian Andrade got the Lions started early with two back to back three pointers. The Lions were battle tested throughout the first half as Daniel Felix ended the half with an amazing thirty foot shot to send the Lions up 36-30.
The second half proved to be a battle of of wills as both teams were trying to lay the final nail in the coffin. Despite dropping a huge lead in the fourth quarter, the Lions would send the game into overtime marking this their second overtime trip of the season. The Knights would take the early advantage with two consecutive points from their guard Ben Le, however, it was Niko Yamamoto’s back to back three’s that kept the Lions within striking distance of finishing off the Knights once and for all.
With buckets trading back and fourth in the overtime period, it was Daniel Felix and Niko Yamamoto’s free throws down the stretch that gave the Lions the lead and the eventual two point win.
They say it was a battle of the offenses, however, it was the war in the trenches that ultimately won the game for the Lions. Led by senior guard Ozzy Mancilla’s 15 point and 13 rebound performance, Mancilla’s rebounding down the stretch saved the Lions from the potential upset. Daniel Felix finished the game with 22 points, however it was Mancilla who ended up as the eventual “Player of The Game.”
With “phase two” at its end and finishing at a perfect 5-0, the Lions enter Miramonte League Play with an astonishing 13-2 record. Edgewood now begins the quest for their first League Championship in school history starting Tuesday night against La Puente High School. The Warriors from La Puente look to avenge their three point loss from last season’s Edgewood Senior Night as Daniel Felix hit the game winning three point shot to spoil La Puente’s chances of sweeping the Lions in league play. TIp-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Lions Den!
