Edgewood High School
Bassett High School
After Tuesday’s matchup against the Garey Vikings, the Lions were facing a must win situation Friday night. This time, the Lions would have to travel to Bassett High School to face a tough Olympian team who on Tuesday dropped a nail bitter to Pomona High School 59-58 in overtime.
Facing a hostile environment, the Lions stayed poised under pressure taking an early lead before trading back and forth baskets with the game being tied at 28 all at the half. The Lions faced a 4 point deficit down 32-28 before taking once again reclaiming the lead 44-40 at the end of the third quarter.
The Lions seemed destined to send the game to double digits in the fourth taking a nine point lead, but the Olympians came back in a hurry capitalizing off the Lion turnovers. With Bassett’s Rudy Suarez coming alive in the fourth quarter, the Lions were in desperate need to finally put the nail in the coffin. With Olympian sophomore Carlos Perez knocking down a long three point shot with 2 seconds to go, the Olympians were only down by one. However with a pair of free throws early from Daniel Felix and the go ahead free throw with one second left from Ozzy Mancilla, the Lions prevailed 61-59.
Senior guard and player of the game Ozzy Mancilla had a monstrous game earning 25 points and six rebounds. Niko Yamamoto finished with 14 points. Alfredo Diaz joined the pack earning his stripes on the defensive end earning 10 rebounds, but finished the game also with 9 points including a huge three pointer late in the fourth. Daniel Felix also provided a huge spark for the Lions with 8 points.
The Lions (15-4, 2-2) must now face the task of taking on the undefeated Pomona Red Devils who are currently coming off the heels of a 62-52 win over La Puente High School.
