Edgewood High School
La Puente High School
Following Tuesday’s loss to Pomona, the Lions were looking to bounce back in the Miramonte League standings against the La Puente Warriors. In their previous encounter, the Warriors defeated the Lions 60-54. Now with the second game at La Puente, the Lions were destined to avenge their last game.
La Puente took an early 15-9 lead at the end of the first, but the Lions crawled back in the second quarter sending the game to 23-21 La Puente at the half. Following a tightly contested third quarter and fourth quarter the Warriors seemed destined to pull off with another victory over the Lions. However, it was Ozzy Mancilla’s pair of free throws with 10 seconds left sent the game into overtime.
In overtime with 20 seconds remaining, Daniel Felix sent the Lions up by two however, that was quickly erased by a wide open layup from the Warriors. In double-overtime, Mancilla was the hero for the Lions offensively as he knocked down a wide open three with 1:23 remaining in the extra period. Defensively it was Isaac Gutierrez’ heroic rebound with 7 seconds remaining that sealed the deal in what will go down as an epic confrontation between the two schools.
Contributing for the Lions was Daniel Felix with 21 points and six assists, Niko Yamamoto with 19 points, Ozzy Mancilla with 11 points and 12 rebounds, Isaac Gutierrez with 9 points and Sebastian Andrade with 12 points.
The Lions (16-5, 3-3) now have a four game home stretch with the Ganesha Giants up first Tuesday January 31 at 6:30 p.m.
